"When William 'Slim' Tucker Discovered the Crossroads"  by Najee Dorsey

*On Tuesday January 3rd, 1606, the first recorded birth of a child of African decent in the continental United States occurred. This was is in the Cathedral Parish Archives in St. Augustine, Florida, thirteen years before enslaved Africans were first brought to the English colony at Jamestown in 1619.

William Tucker, the first Black child born (recorded) in the American colonies, was baptized on January 3, 1624, in Jamestown, Virginia. Two of the first Africans to be brought to North America in 1619 were simply called Anthony and Isabella they were married and in 1624 gave birth to the first Black child born in English America naming him William Tucker in honor of a Virginia Planter.

After 1619, all Africans brought into the colonies were sold as slaves. Today, the black population Is over 35-million, or nearly 13-percent of the U.S. total. The largest numbers of African Americans live in New York State (more than 3-million). Other states with African American populations of more than 2-million include California, Florida, Georgia and Texas.

 

 

Born in Arkansas, on January 26, 1973 and now residing in Atlanta, Georgia, Najee Dorsey; visual artist, gallerist, producer, CEO and founder of Black Art In America is known for embracing Southern roots in his works and relaying on canvas stories untold but not forgotten of the African American life. His artworks have been featured in exhibitions at the Arnika Dawkins Gallery, The Columbus Museum, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, David C. Driskell Center, the Charles H. Wright Museum; Syracuse University; the African American Museum in Dallas, TX; Houston Museum of African American Culture, the Marietta Museum of Art, FL; Clark Atlanta University Museum, the University of Arkansas Library and Liberty Bank Trust Company in New Orleans, LA. Dorsey has been featured in articles for the ARTnews and the Forbes, “PRIZM Awakens Mighty Overdue Dialogue at Miami Art Week Fair Dedicated to African and African Diaspora Artist” written by Natasha Gural.
