"DeJay's Olympia Brass Band" by Del Forsloff

8 x 8 inches acrylic painting on wood panel mounted on wood, (1978)-- unframed

Del Forsloff (1935- ) is a renowned jazz artist and illustrator. He began his study of art at the age of 12 at the Portland Art Museum, then went on to refine his education at the Burnley School of Professional Art now the Seattle Academy of Fine Arts. Since then he has continued his career in art through many different venues.

Commercial art became Forsloff’s first venture into using his talents as a young ma. He became Art Director for several department stores in Portland, Oregon before going on to work at the Seattle Times and becoming a manager of a group of Seattle artists doing portraits at the Seattle Center. The independent experience as an artist became a call that Forsloff heard, so he eventually moved to New Orleans to join one of the most famous art colonies in the country. While in New Orleans Forsloff owned and operated an art gallery in the French Quarter and worked with his fellows around Jackson Square. He became known for a special kind of art depicting jazz scenes. He continued to refine this art over many years, accompanying it with paintings in the magic realism genre. Forsloff also continued doing portraits and began to develop a style of caricature that became refined later when he moved to Hawaii.

In Hawaii, Forsloff worked in a number of different areas, contributing his talents to free lance areas with tourists, doing portraits and caricatures as well as commercial art. He worked as the artist on the famous Windjammer dinner cruises where he also performed part time as a musician with his accordion. Forsloff never forgot some of his best artistic roots, returning to Louisiana for a brief period in Lafayette from 1990 to late 1992, where he owned and operated a gallery and continued to sell his paintings and those of others, and painted Louisiana art scenes, portraits and caricatures. After retiring from working with veterans in transition to work programs in Hawaii, and working part time as a painter, Forsloff returned to his art in Natchitoches, Louisiana where he continues to paint and assist his wife with a bed and breakfast in the Historic District of Natchitoches.
