HALE WOODRUFF: Portfolio of 8 linoleum cuts
These prints are from the artist's Atlanta period, which depicts scenes of the African American struggle from 1931-1946. This portfolio is one of 300 numbered sets and was purchased from the executor of the artist's estate. There are 8 prints in total, printed posthumously from the artist’s blocks and destroyed after the series was printed.
Each print is numbered 188/300 in pencil, lower left. Printed by master printer, Robert Blackburn's Printmaking Workshop, New York, in 1996, with the blind stamp lower left. Published by the artist's wife and estate, with the blind stamp lower right.
Hale Woodruff's portfolio is worthy of any African American Art collection and is already found in numerous Museums, including the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
The portfolio last sold at Swann Auction Galleries for $6,960, (including buyers premium,) in February 2012.
